Carolyn Finney, Ph.D. is a writer, performer and cultural geographer. As a professor in Environmental Science, Policy and Management at the College of Natural Resources at the University of California, Berkeley, she explores how issues of difference impact participation in decision-making processes designed to address environmental issues. Although Carolyn pursed an acting career for eleven years, a backpacking trip around the world and living in Nepal changed the course of her life. Motivated by these experiences, she returned to school after a 15-year absence to complete a B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. Her first book, “Black Faces, White Spaces” she examines ways in which nature and the environment are racialized in America.

Nikky Finney, Ph. D. was born in South Carolina, within listening distance of the sea. A child of activists, she came of age during the Civil Rights and Black Arts Movements. Finney has authored four books of poetry: Head Off & Split (2011); The World Is Round(2003); Rice (1995); and On Wings Made of Gauze (1985). The John H. Bennett, Jr. Chair in Southern Letters and Literature at the University of South Carolina, Finney also authored Heartwood (1997) edited The Ringing Ear: Black Poets Lean South (2007), and co- founded the Affrilachian Poets. Movements Grow From Art

http://doheelee.com/

In this half hour, we speak with multimedia shamanistic performer Dohee Lee, whose new work MAGO, explores the devastating history of Jeju Island, and honors the women of her grandmother's generation, a matriarchy of free divers who spent half their lives under water. We delve into the power of art to keep hope alive in tough times.

Inspired by a dream, Lee researched the Korean goddess Mago who she describes at the mother of humanity and created this artistic expression of her homeland and memories of her grandparents in 1947 after the Japanese occupation. She looks at the importance of the present's connection to the past.

Dohee Lee's World Premier performance of MAGO is at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, CA on November 14th and 15th at 8 PM
