Monday, December 14, 2020: Examining the crisis of the child care system in the US

This Monday December 14th on KPFA Radio’s  "Women’s Magazine" we look at how racial Capitalism and Patriarchy have created a punitive underfunded child care system in the U.S. where the  the average hourly wage of child care workers is $10.72 per hour,  many of the women in need of child care are black and brown women and few get any government support in accessing child care.  This system is informed by the history of slavery in the U.S. where women’s job to reproduce the work force is required but never supported.  And the reality in our neoliberal economy is that many women especially women of color are the essential workers during covid and are working 2-3 jobs just to survive and yet rarely getting any government support for child care.

Today we talk to Marcy Whitebook from the Center for the Study of Child Care Employment at UC Berkeley, Clarissa Douthard with Parent Voices Oakland and Loira Limbal director of the award winning documentary about child care “Through the Night” that shows how caregivers balance the demands of “women’s work” while navigating systemic racism, sexism and classism in the U.S. today. This beautiful film is available online at https://www.throughthenightfilm.com/ and is also showing at the Roxy Theater locally.

This week is fund drive for KPFA  so please call  KPFA Radio at 1.800.439.5732 or online at KPFA.org and donate any amount you can to help keep voices like this and stories about women on the frontlines stay on the air.  It is because we are a listener sponsored station that we can have these radical and unheard  voices on the air.  So please call and support KPFA.  And please share this announcement with others.

Thank you

Monday, October 8, 2018: Family Stories of Resistance and Resilience - Novelist Barbara Artson

Barbara Artson grew up NOT hearing the stories of her family's exodus from Russia in the early 20th century, or the experiences that led to it, but she saw their impact, in her mother's fear of anything unfamiliar, in her deaf aunt's experience of being cut off from the world and then treated as if she were unintelligent because she was cut off. In her debut novel, Odessa Odessa, Barbara imagines those experiences and uses her knowledge as a psychoanalyst to reflect on how the legacy of trauma affects multiple generations, not only in this country but in Palestine as well. She also connects the story she tells, in which a mother is separated from her son by immigration authorities - in this case in Germany - to the trauma of parents and children separated at the U.S.-Mexico border. Barbara and Kate will be in conversation on Thursday night at 7PM, October 18 at Books, Inc. in Berkeley at 1491 Shattuck Ave.

Monday, October 9, 2017: Betsy Graziani Fasbinder

Next Kate interviews Betsy Graziani Fasbinder. She describes herself as "a teacher, an organizational consultant, a corporate trainer, a licensed psychotherapist, a writing and speaking coach, and through it all, a writer." Her most recent book, Filling Her Shoes: A Memoir of an Inherited Family, the book that Fasbinder wished for when she first became a parent.

From Goodreads:
On the day that she decided to marry a widower--also a long-time friend--Betsy Graziani Fasbinder knew that she wasn't only gaining a husband, she was inheriting a son. Unlike many stepmothers, Betsy didn't have to struggle with an ex, or court battles, or the weekend shuffle between houses--but she did have to navigate living in the shadow of a young mother taken too soon, to honor the memory of her son's first mother, and to become the kind of parent and partner she herself wanted to be. Over time this family would learn how love's roots were formed in their shared losses, and how the new family love and joy they created together would become the richest kind of inheritance.

June 23, 20124: Raising Resilient Children

Raising Resilient Children in the 21st Century

Tara Dorabji talks with Dr. Shimi Kang, author of The Dolphin Way, and Dr. Ernest Swihart, author of The Manipulative Child: How to Regain Control and Raise Resilient, Resourceful and Independent Kids.

Dr. Shimi Kang talks about parenting, balancing, and living without "boiling over." Her research is on the science of self-motivation. She emphasizes how to reduce the stress of parenting to help raise a child with skills for the 21st century.

Dr. Kang uses the POD acronym: Play, Others, Downtime. The Dolphin Way is available in most bookstores and at thedolphinway.org.

Next Tara interviews Dr. Ernest Swihart, a pediatrician and professor in Minnesota. Drs. Swihart and Cotter, a pediatrician and a child psychologist collaborated for nearly twenty-five years on a clinically proven program for blocking manipulative behavior and getting our kids back on track. The Manipulative Child explores letting a child fail without being hurt. He maintains that children learn far more from failure than success won without effort.

The program teaches parents to say no without feeling guilt; to resist the urge to feel responsible for their child's happiness; to view their children as emotionally competent and resilient; and most importantly, to realize that effective parenting means allowing your child to make mistakes and develop a sense of competence, which leads to enhanced self-esteem and an ability to live independently and successfully in the real world.
