Monday, June 10, 2019: Preparing for Post-Roe America

Find the book at your local book store, on-line
or ask your library to order it.

Kate Raphael of KPFA Women's Magazine speaks with Robin Marty, author of Handbook for a Post-Roe America about what we should be doing to prepare for the end of Roe. Robin says we should look at it as an opportunity to build a stronger movement and improve access to all health care options for all women, and suggests concrete ways we can do that.

Support and protect abortion access and funding groups if you can't get pregnant, make an abortion plan if you can. Here's how:

ACCESS: Women's Health Justice -provides a range of abortion services including housing for those recovering from later abortion (after 15 weeks).
National Network of Abortion Funds -reproductive justice group run by women of color and queer women.
  Find a fund
  Need an abortion
Aid Access -medication abortion

Monday, July 9, 2018: The Supreme Court

"67% of the American public do not want Roe v. Wade overturned." -Heather Booth

Protestors outside the Supreme Court, July 9th

Can Roe be saved? Is there life for unions after Janus? And what about the Affordable Care Act? Veteran organizer Heather Booth says we can win if we don't give up the fight.  Booth was the founder of Jane, a collective which provided over 11,000 safe underground abortions between 1969 and 1973 in Chicago. She also founded Midwest Academy, which has trained 25,000 community and labor organizers over the past four decades.

"There is a path in stopping Trump's nominee," says Booth. Demand Justice, Planned Parenthood, MoveOn.org, Refuse Fascism and The Center for Reproductive Rights are good sources of information. The Center for Reproductive Rights has up-to-date news about the fight to protect abortion rights all over the US and the world. Organize, act and vote. "Democracy and justice can still be the law of the land."-Heather Booth

Monday, November 28, 2016: Protecting Health Justice, the Environment and Ourselves in a Time of Crisis and Fear

Remembering Jean Pauline

We remember feminist, anarchist and labor activist and organizer, Jean Pauline who died last week at age 95. A memorial is being planned for January to celebrate Jean's life.

Next up we interview Layidua Salazar on abortion and protecting reproductive rights.

Reproductive and women's health rights are certain to be under attack under a Trump/Pence White House and Republican controlled Congress. As Republicans have come to dominate state houses across the country, California remains a relative bright spot, but many women still are unable to access the wide range of services that exist. ACCESS Women's Health Justice and the National Network of Abortion Funds are among the organizations working to ensure that women can exercise their rights to have or not have children and receive the health care they choose. We speak with Layidua Salazar, board member of ACCESS Women's Health Justice. Check out their website for information and to sign up for ACCESS newsletter. For health questions call 1-800-376-4636 for English and 1-888-442-2237 for Spanish.

Monday, March 21, 2016: Zika in El Salvador

Zika Poster from the CDC.org

We speak with Suyapa Portillo about Zika virus and the Salvadoran government's recommendation that women avoid getting pregnant for the next two years.  While motivated by a concern for the well-being of women and babies, the recommendation will be hard to implement since abortion is completely illegal in El Salvador.  Portillo suggests that Zika must be seen in the context of other health and economic issues facing low-income Salvadoran women.

Monday, June 8, 2015: Ireland--Feminist Rights and LGBT

Why is gay marriage winning and abortion rights losing? Today June 8th on KPFA Radio's Women's Magazine we talk to feminists Katha Pollitt and Meghan Murphy about the recent vote in Ireland to legalize same sex marriage and we ask how is it that Ireland is now touted as in the vanguard of progressive politics after legalizing same sex marriage while abortion is still illegal in Ireland except when a women's life is in danger. Are the rights of LGBT people and feminists in conflict?

Monday, January 26, 2015: Speak For Yourself! Reproductive Justice

How Black Women are Reclaiming the Conversation About Abortion.

"No mother should have to give birth, raise a child, and then worry about whether or not a police force which is designed to protect and serve is going to instead harass and murder their child." Marcela Howell

We are proud to announce our collective partnership in forming In Our Own Voice: National Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda, an organizational initiative designed to amplify and lift up the voices of Black women at national and regional levels in our ongoing fight to secure reproductive justice for all women and girls. (Shutterstock)

Kate interviews Marcela Howell, strategic director of In Our Own Voice: National Black Women's Reproductive Justice Agenda.  The new collaborative by five Black women's organizations seeks to reframe the discussion about abortion and reproductive choice to foreground the experience and voices of Black women.

In Our Own Voice: National Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda is a partnership between Black Women for Wellness, Black Women’s Health Imperative, New Voices Pittsburgh, SisterLove, SPARK Reproductive Justice Now and Communications Consortium Media Center. The initiative will focus on abortion rights and access, contraceptive equity, and comprehensive sex education as our key policy issues. As a Reproductive Justice initiative, we will approach these issues from a human rights perspective, incorporating the intersections of race, gender, class, sexual orientation, and gender identity with the situational impacts of economics, politics, and culture that make up the lived experiences of Black women in this country.

Reproductive justice has always meant for Black women not only the right to not have a child but also the right to have a child in a safe and healthy environment because there were so many other issues preventing Black women from having children such as forced sterilization, government sanctions and other things. Reproductive justice embodies criminal justice issues, environmental issues, economic issues, and workplace issues.

Howell discusses HR7 which prohibits funding for abortion care for poor women. This blocks access to a legal medical procedure for poor women most of whom are Black women. Listen now or Get MP3. 12:38 min.

You can reach Marcela Howell at mhowell@ccmc.org, www.blackrj.org or tweet her at #blackwomensrj.

June 9, 2014: Diana Whitten discusses her film, VESSEL

VESSEL

Diana Whitten discusses her film, VESSEL, which chronicles the voyages of Women On Waves, a bold women's health movement bringing women-controlled medical abortion to ports of call around the world. This film follows Dutch physician, Rebecca Gomperts, who in 2001 began a sailing voyage to provide women with safe abortions.

A fearless sea captain sails a ship through loopholes in international law, providing abortions on the high seas, and leaving in her wake a network of emboldened activists who trust women to handle abortion on their own terms.

VESSEL airs at the Roxie on Saturday, June 14th at 4:45 PM and Wednesday, June 18th at 7:01 PM. Tickets are available at sfindie.com.

August 5: Harvesting Human Eggs & International Surrogacy; Abortion Rights Freedom Ride

Harvesting Human Eggs & International Surrogacy: Risks to Health & Human Rights

Discussing California AB 926 (on Governor Brown's desk as of August 5th): A bill that would repeal the current limits on compensation for women who 'donate' their eggs to research, and elevate it to $5-10K. Framed as a 'women's equity' bill, it neglects the health risks of invasive egg donation procedures. We'll discuss the history of this legislation, the health risks - as seen in the acclaimed documentary Eggsploitation - as well the legal argument against harvesting human eggs & the under-regulated industry of international surrogacy.

Featured Guests:
Diane Tober, PhD, Assoc. Executive Director of the Center for Genetics and Society
