Monday, April 22, 2109: Nell Painter and Who Gets to be Seen As an Artist?

In today's program Kate Raphael speaks with two powerful African American artists. First is an interview with Nell Painter. In the next segment we hear from Jovelyn Richards.

Nell Painter, a prominent historian and author of the New York Times Bestseller, The History of White People, didn't do what many people do when they retire. At 64, after retiring from Princeton University, she entered art school, receiving a BFA from Mason Goss School of Art at Rutgers, and then heading to the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design for an MFA in painting. There, she developed a new appreciation for formalism, while coming to terms with the fact that age was the defining element of how her young classmates saw - or didn't see - her.  She'll be speaking at the upcoming Bay Area Book Festival about her memoir, Old In Art School, a National Critics’ Circle Award Finalist, and about her understanding of how race, gender and age affect who gets to be called an artist.  She'll also be joining a panel on The Legacy of Adrienne Rich and the Shape of Our Feminist Future.

Today is Earth Day and National Poetry Month. The show begins with a reading of the poem "Rise" by Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner and Aka Niviâna. Continue listening for a recording by Adrienne Rich after the first interview. Click here to listen to the entire show. 59:50 min

Monday December 17, 2018: The Space Between Us

The Space Between Women and Aging

Jovelyn Richards, host of The Space Between Us, talks ageism, the myths of aging and how women from various cultures approach aging with Susan Avery Steward, PhD.

Susan Avery Steward, a Professor of Psychology for over thirty years (now emerita), a retired therapist, and four times a grandmother, Susan Avery Stewart, PhD, is passionate about sharing the gifts of late life in a culture that mistakenly equates old age with debilitating decline.

Her book, Winter’s Graces: The Surprising Gifts of Later Life, was published in October by She Writes Press (Berkeley). In its pages she weaves together folktales, current research in gerontology and other fields, themes from the world’s wisdom traditions, stories of her own and other older women’s experience, and characters from film that reflect the qualities that ripen in later life, such as contentment, agelessness, simplicity, and necessary fierceness.

Monday, January 25, 2016: Gray and proud? Struggles and triumphs of older women

Two segments look at the experience of "women of a certain age" in a culture obsessed with eternal youth.

Lily Iona McKenzie joins me to talk about her rich journey from high school dropout and teenage mom in Alberta to author, writing teacher and labor leader in San Francisco, with forays into longshore work, waitressing and everything in between.  Her first novel, Fling, is a twist on the traditional "coming of age" story, asking whether women can come of age at 60, or even 90.

And I speak with New York Times reporter Patti Cohen, whose recent article, "Over 50, Female and Unemployed" looked at the struggles of women over 50 to find jobs, even as the general employment picture improves.  Patti covers economics for the times and is the author of the book In Our Prime: The Invention of Middle Age.

On another note, we'll listen to a bit of Davey D's interview with Alicia of Black Seed: Queer Liberation Collective, which organized the Bay Bridge shutdown last Monday.  Plus the Women's Calendar will tell you about events you want to know about.

Monday September 8, 2014: Exploring the experience of older homeless women

Kate Raphael interviews Jo Kreiter of Flyaway Productions. Jo's new aerial dance piece, Multiple Mary and Invisible Jane, explores the experience of older homeless women.Kate and Jo talk about some of the stories about homeless women in San Francisco from a different, on the street perspective.Jo pushes through "compassion fatigue" with her incredible production.

In collaboration with journalist Rose Aguilar, Episcopal Community Services of SF, UC Hastings College of the Law, and composer Pamela Z, Flyaway will instigate the piece  on the border between the Tenderloin and Central Market Neighborhoods of downtown SF, where the city’s extremes of privilege and deprivation crash into each other. We will illuminate the experience of homeless women in San Francisco, whose population has grown dramatically in the last 20 years.  Flyaway will capture the sorrow faced by an increasing number of these women, as well as the dignity with which they are facing their new American reality. Featuring Erin Mei-Ling Stuart, Alayna Stroud, Marystarr Hope, Becca Dean, Laura Ellis, and Esther Wrobel.

Our Lesbian She-roes, Our Fore Mothers

Lorraine Hansberry
On this week's show, we'll listen to part of a herstory event organized by Old Lesbians Organizing for Change honoring lesbian she-roes of the past. Everyone knows about Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, but how many of us knew social welfare activist Jane Addams and playwright Lorraine Hansberry were members of the club? And many people may not even know the name Frances Perkins at all, even though we have her to thank for Medicare and Social Security.
