Monday, May 29, 2017: Restorative Justice

KPFA’s Women’s Magazine looks at the practice of Restorative Justice and how that practice of justice based on healing provides an alternative to the punitive systems we have in our society today. Unlike the punitive system of justice we have, Restorative Justice focuses on healing and transforming the wounds of victims, offenders and communities caused by the wrongdoing through truth telling, apology, making amends, and reconciliation.

We talk to three leaders in Restorative Justice in the Bay Area. Jodie Geddes, Community Organizer Coordinator at Restorative Justice for Oakland Youth (RJOY), Rose Elizondo, co-founder of the San Quentin Prison RJ interfaith group and of the North Oakland Restorative Justice Council, and Malachi Scott, the Re-entry and Community Restorative Justice Coordinator at RJOY and co-founder of the North Oakland Restorative Justice Council.

At the book launch at Laurel Bookstore on May 3, editor Carolina de Robertis (The Invisible Mountain) was joined by contributors Jewelle Gomez (The Gilda Stories), Aya de Leon (Uptown Thief), Faith Adiele (The Nigerian-Nordic Girl's Guide to Lady Problems), Reyna Grande (The Distance Between Us) and Kate Schatz (Rad Women Worldwide) for an evening of inspiring and challenging words and heart-healing community.

Hi, everyone, if you missed Kate's interview with L.A. Kauffman, author of Direct Action: Protest and the Reinvention of American Radicalism, on May Day, this is your chance to hear this lively conversation about the nearly forgotten movements of the last forty years.

Monday, May 8, 2017: Activist & former political prisoner Bo Brown

This week on KPFA Women's Magazine, we talk with Bo (Rita D.) Brown, who spent eight years in prison for her work as part of the revolutionary George Jackson Brigade.  A white working-class butch from rural Oregon, Brown was known as the "Gentleman Bank Robber," for a number of years in Seattle.  In this interview with Kate Raphael, she talks about coming out, becoming politicized and her relationship with Black Panther Assata Shakur. Bo Brown is now dealing with Lewy-Body dementia; a benefit for her expenses will be held on May 13 in Oakland.  (If you can't make it but want to contribute, you can do so here.)

May Day 2017 on Women's Magazine: Dissent, Love, Hope Through Writing and Action

L.A. Kauffman Discusses Direct Action

As protests shut down ICE offices, corporations and federal buildings around the country, L.A. Kauffman talks about the history of radical action in the U.S. beginning May Day 1971, when an audacious collection of radical announced that "If the government won't stop the war, we'll stop the government."  The extraordinary story of a nearly forgotten action in Washington, D.C. leads into a discussion of movements from the anti-nuclear power protests of the 1970s and 80s to the AIDS action movement and the 1999 Battle of Seattle, all woven together through a set of organizing structures and tactics heavily influenced by the feminist and radical queer movements.

Kauffman, the author of the new book, DIRECT ACTION: Protest and the Reinvention of American Radicalism, challenges the idea that the effectiveness of protests should be judged either by their size or their ability to directly accomplish their stated objectives.
