Kate Raphael speaks with Amy Adrion about her documentary HALF THE PICTURE, which screens at the San Francisco International Film Festival April 7, 9 and 16. Adrion interviews a diverse group of women filmmakers including Ava DuVernay (Selma), Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball), Jill Soloway (Transparent), Lena Dunham (Girls) and Karen Kusama (Girlfight). Women make up only 4.5% of directors of top grossing Hollywood films annually; women of color make up 0.06%; and these numbers have not changed in twenty years.

Director Amy Adrion is expected to attend the April 7 and 9 screenings. April 9 screening is a special collaboration with additional guests. Following the April 9 screening, the Festival will present an extended conversation about building a pipeline towards gender equity in the film and media industry, featuring director Amy Adrion from Half the Picture and Esther Pearl, Founder & Executive Director of Camp Reel Stories - A Media Camp for Girls.

Mariposa and the Saint: From Solitary Confinement, a Play Through Letters

In 2012, Mariposa was sentenced to fifteen months in solitary confinement. Three years later she is still there. Through letters with longtime friend and current collaborator, Julia Steele Allen, Mariposa brings her experience to the stage.

Kate speaks with writer/actor Julia Steele Allen about Mariposa and the Saint, the play she co-wrote with Sara (Mariposa) Fonseca, who is incarcerated in solitary confinement at the California Institution for Women.  Julia talks about the play, her collaboration with Mariposa, and the work of the California Coalition for Women Prisoners.

The San Francisco International Film Festival is coming up.  We talk with program director Rachel Rosen and filmmaker Jenni Olson.

Rachel Rosen is the director of programming for the San Francisco Film Society. She was director of programming for Film Independent and the Los Angeles Film Festival for eight years. Previously, Rosen was associate director of programming for the San Francisco International Film Festival where she programmed for seven years.  She has worked in various capacities for the New York Film Festival, New York’s Film Forum, and Tri-Star Pictures. A graduate of Stanford University’s Master of Arts program in Documentary Film, Rosen directed Serious Weather, a short documentary that was shown at the Vancouver and San Francisco International Film Festivals, and the British Short Film Festival. She is an occasional contributor on the subject of documentary film to Film Comment magazine.

Jenni Olson talks with Kate about her film, The Royal Road. A cinematic essay in defense of remembering, The Royal Road offers up a primer on Junipero Serra's Spanish colonization of California and the Mexican American War alongside intimate reflections on nostalgia, the pursuit of unavailable women, butch identity and Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo — all against a contemplative backdrop of 16mm urban California landscapes, and featuring a voiceover cameo by Tony Kushner.
