Monday, March 19, 2018: Jovelyn Richards hosts The Space Between Us

On today's show Linda Gartz speaks with KPFA Women's Magazine host Jovelyn Richards of a fractured Chicago community in the 1960's in her new book, Redlined. This is a personal, political, social book.

Redlined exposes the racist mortgage laws that ravage a Chicago community in the 1960s, told through the story of one white family navigating the uncharted shoals of its neighborhood’s racial change. Based on long-hidden letters and diaries, this vivid memoir cracks open and lays bare complicated truths of marriage, sexual freedom, and race relations in a devastated landscape.

The book will be available at your local bookstore next month.

In the second part of today's show Jovelyn interviews Selena Hernandez, 4th generation Mexican American about her journey to discover her identity through studying Spanish and dance. She credits her grandfather for inspiring her to learn about her culture and history at a young age.
