Maxine Hong Kingston, whose book The Woman Warrior is said to be the most frequently taught work of a living writer in US universities, reflects on the truths she received from her parents, both of whom were undocumented. She talks about how the Vietnam War affected her family - two of her brothers were drafted, and her feelings about pacifism and Buddhism, as well as how she became a writer and the impact of negative comments about her work.
