Monday, December 10, 2018: Please support KPFA Women's Magazine
It's that time again. It's KPFA's final fundraiser of the year. Today's show features an interview with acclaimed writer Maxine Hong Kingston that was aired over a year ago, along with a conversation between Maxine and Gary Gach, author of PAUSE, BREATHE, SMILE: AWAKENING MINDFULNESS WHEN MEDITATION IS NOT ENOUGH. (For anyone who doesn't know, Maxine is author of THE WOMAN WARRIOR, the most frequently taught book by a living writer in American universities, and CHINA MEN, winner of the National Book Award.)

Kate Raphael says: "We're offering the full 90+ minute talk as a thank you gift for your pledge to KPFA of $75 or $5 a month (I know, $5 a month is $60, but that's what they told me), and the book for a donation of $100 (book and CD for $150). Usually I think meditation and mindfulness are not my thing, but I have to say, I was kind of blown away by this discussion, especially when Maxine said that protest marches are a form of meditation! [Note: gifts are still available on KPFA Donate.]
"Any amount, from $5 to $500, helps us make our goal of $1500 for the hour, and lets KPFA know that you value feminist and gender-oriented programming. And helps keep the voices you need coming to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. (I was hearing the new Sunday evening music show, Motown on Mondays, while I was here at the station tonight, and it's pretty great. If you haven't heard it, check it out - 10 pm on Sundays.)"

Monday, September 11, 2017: Maxine Hong Kingston
Maxine Hong Kingston, whose book The Woman Warrior is said to be the most frequently taught work of a living writer in US universities, reflects on the truths she received from her parents, both of whom were undocumented. She talks about how the Vietnam War affected her family - two of her brothers were drafted, and her feelings about pacifism and Buddhism, as well as how she became a writer and the impact of negative comments about her work. I'll be in conversation with Maxine next Sunday, September 17, at the final Peace Talk sponsored by Women's International League for Peace and Freedom East Bay and San Francisco.
