Siblings in Liberation: African and Asian American Feminist Solidarity

What are the radical possibilities of catalyzing cross-racial feminist solidarities, imaginations, and substantive realities? What revolutions must we create within ourselves to dismantle our prejudices, discrimination, and silences to create the world we want to see?

We’re featuring audio from the Asian American Writers’ Workshop’s event Siblings in Liberation, Black and Asian Feminist Solidarities, which celebrated the editorial collaboration between Black Women Radicals and the Asian American Feminist Collective that found a home in AAWW’s digital magazine The Margins. Black and Asian Feminist Solidarities is an ongoing monthly series of critical essays, conversations, poetry, fiction, and more. The series looks to Black and Asian American feminist histories, practices, and frameworks on care, community, and survival as the tools and strategies to build towards collective liberation.

This hour features remarks and discussion with Jaimee Swift of Black Women Radicals and Tiffany Diane Tso, Senti Sojwal, Salonee Bhaman, and Rachel Kuo of the Asian American Feminist Collective; a poetry reading by Cecile Afable and Zuri Gordon; and a conversation between sex work activists Kate Zen and SX Noir.

Kate speaks with Kyle Chu, writer-actor and co-creator of the web series CHOSEN FAM, which will have its first pilot screening party on Wednesday, September 11 at El Rio at 6:30 pm.* CHOSEN FAM follows the members of all-QTPOC Indy rock band navigates relationships, growing up and growing apart in the Bay Area DIY music scene.  Kate talks with Kyle about the how and why of making a web series (what she calls a "baby TV show") on a shoestring and what current and former shows she admires.

* The screening at El Rio will also be a fund raiser to help launch the first series of CHOSEN FAM.

April 28, 2014: Eating Cultures

Asian American Women Artist Association (AAWAA) and Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center (APICC) join forces to present the multidisciplinary art exhibition Eating Cultures, for the United States of Asian America Festival.

Featuring over thirty emerging and established Asian Pacific American artists from around the country, Eating Cultures is a deliciously provocative multi-disciplinary arts exhibition of artworks inspired by Asian American food and foodways. Using food as a lens, artist share stories of global migration, adaptation, entrepreneurship, and the central importance of food in Asian communities around the world.

Kate Raphael talks to queer artists Sigi Arnejo, Kay Cuajunco and Genevieve Erin O'Brien about their contributions to the show, their exploration of identity and the meaning of food in their Asian cultures.

This Memorial Day, we consider whose "sacrifices for freedom" are acknowledged and valued in our culture.

First up, Kate Raphael speaks with Cynthia Enloe, research professor at Clark University and one of the foremost feminist scholars on militarism, masculinity and sexual violence.  Enloe discusses the recent revelations about who's running the sexual assault prevention programs in our military, and what "feminist questions" that should lead to.  Enloe is the author of thirteen books including Bananas, Beaches and Bases: Making Feminist Sense of International Politics; Maneuvers: The International Politics of Militarizing Women’s Lives and Nimo’s War, Emma’s War: Making Feminist Sense of the Iraq War. Her newest book (co-authored with feminist geographer Joni Seager) is: The Real State of America: Mapping the Myths and Truths about the United States.

Arab women are frequently claimed as the beneficiaries of our current military enterprises, but this lens applies colonial definitions of Arab womanhood, says Rabab Abdulhadi, Professor of Ethnic Studies/Race and Resistance Studies at San Francisco State University.  Abdulhadi was one of the keynote speakers at the recent San Francisco Arab Women's Conference, an annual event hosted by the Arab Cultural and Community Center.  In this challenging and informative talk, she confronts the Islamophobia and Orientalism of some well-respected Western feminist icons, and cites stories of how Arab women are resisting both colonial and nationalistic efforts to control their image.  (unedited, 34:37)

Kearny Street Workshop presents KSW Runway: Celebrate Your Body
Coming up this Friday night, May 31, at SomArts, KSW Runway: Celebrate Your Body is an alternative fashion and music show that pays tribute to the creativity and plurality of the Bay Area. For one night only, SOMArts’ Bay Gallery will be transformed into a street fair, replete with battling models, live performances, a DJ, pop-up food stalls, vendors, prizes, and surprise guests. Featured designers and stylists include 31 Rax, Bambie, Zuriel Bautista, Chartreuse, Kalakari, and Prince x Rose, while Dirty Boots, Little Sister, Cynthia Lin, and Micropixie rock out on the music stage. The Rice Rockettes, an all-Asian drag troupe, performs at intermission.
TJ Basa tells us about the origins of KSW Runway and the mission of Kearny Street Workshop, the oldest Asian Pacific American multimedia arts organization in the country.
