Monday, March 21, 2016: Zika in El Salvador

We speak with Suyapa Portillo about Zika virus and the Salvadoran government's recommendation that women avoid getting pregnant for the next two years.  While motivated by a concern for the well-being of women and babies, the recommendation will be hard to implement since abortion is completely illegal in El Salvador.  Portillo suggests that Zika must be seen in the context of other health and economic issues facing low-income Salvadoran women.

Then Angela Wellman talks with jazz great Regina Carter, who will be performing at a benefit for the Homeless Prenatal Program on February 27 at San Francisco’s Nourse Theater. HPP provides services to over 4000 low income and homeless families each year. Two staff members from HPP also join the conversation.
