This September 14th on KPFA’s Women’s Magazine we look at some of the highlights of the LGBTIQ Frameline Film Festival which starts this Thursday, September 17th and runs through Sunday, September 27th online.

We talk to Dominque Oneil about some of the really special female centered fiction films. And then we talk to three documentarians who have feature films in Frameline, Ashley O’shay, who is director of the really timely and important new documentary “Unapologetic” which is a powerful and inspiring documentary that follows two Black, queer feminist Chicago women organizers working with the movement against police violence.  And Jen Rainin and Rivkah Beth Medow who are the co-directors of the new documentary “Ahead of the Curve” which is a film that looks at the history of the Lesbian glossy magazine Curve, its founder Franco Stevens and the importance of Curve magazine to the Lesbian community. 

Netflix, Hulu and other movie streaming sites may not have the lesbian or queer film that you want to see so look for the request page on their websites and ask for these films.

Monday, June 10, 2019: Previewing This Year's Queer Film Fest

Jovelyn, Lisa and Kate preview a few of the 174 films from 38 countries on offer at this year's Frameline LGBT International Film Festival, the largest and oldest queer cultural event in the world. We'll talk about documentaries and narratives, US and foreign films, screening in San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley between June 20 and 30.

Dykes, Camera, Action! at the Castro Theatre, Tuesday June 19, 2018 at 4PM 

Lisa Dettmer and Kate Raphael preview films on offer at the San Francisco LGBT Film Festival, presented by Frameline. This 42nd season includes more than 150 narrative, documentary and short films, with 52% directed by women.

Kate and Lisa discuss Picture This, Riot, Night Comes On, A Great Ride, Many Loves One Heart, Fifty Years of Fabulous, The Miseducation of Cameron Post, Appropriate Behavior and more. If you are have trouble deciding what to choose, listen now to their in depth with no spoilers conversation.

Brooke Warner, formerly of Seal Press, is now publisher of She Writes Press. They spoke with Tara Dorabji.

Frameline: Pinkwashing Israeli Apartheid?

Frameline, the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival, is the largest cultural event in the world.  For the last four years, the festival has been met by protests over its partnership with the Israeli consulate, which is a featured copresenter and sponsor of several films each year.  We hear from Zac Barghouti, a member of the Palestinian Youth Movement and a gay man born in Palestine, about the growing movement to oppose "pinkwashing," the Israeli government's marketing campaign aimed at international LGBT communities.

Quebecois Filmmaker Myriam Fougère discusses her documentary, "Lesbiana," which explores "the rise and fall of the lesbian movement of the 1970s and 1980s.  The film shows Tuesday, June 25 at the Castro Theater.  Find out about tickets.
